How to Write GDD + Game Design Document Template

gdd game design document template

Before moving onto backgrounds, introductions, and key descriptions, start by putting your idea into a single, clear sentence. A game design document is a crucial part of game development — especially when you have lots of people working on different aspects of a game. Usually, initial drafts of the game design document are written by the team’s lead game designer, along with others on the design team. And while the lead designer will most often continue to be the “owner” of the document, they’re also responsible for gathering ideas and input from everyone else who’s involved in the game’s development. Mind maps and concept art would help you convey your ideas to your team members in a clear and precise way.

Who reads the GDD?

Game Design Documents (GDD) have a long history and a different place in many designers' toolboxes. Documentation is often seen as the most frustrating and tiresome aspect of game development but it doesn't need to be. When done right it can facilitate communication and collaboration within your team and become a testament to your hard work, a record of all your struggles and victories along the way.

Gameplay Mechanics

Even this basic design can show how an idea is supposed to work relatively effectively. While the one-page method does encourage you to present information in the most appropriate way, this is often a beneficial side effect of limiting your design to a single page. However, what you use doesn’t really matter, what’s important is that it’s a good fit for you and whoever you’re working with. However, there are a huge number of other services that provide similar functionality but in different structures and formats. For example, in the early stages of your project, you probably won’t know exactly how each mechanic is going to work or what everything will look like or what the name of the level 2 shopkeeper’s dog will be.

Various Formats for Game Design Documents

Ultimately what we (or any competing work-for-hire studio) need is to communicate the full vision of the game to our producers, software engineers, artists, and QA testers. Each member of the team needs to understand the aspect he or she is responsible for and be able to visualize the title in action before a single pixel is programmed on screen. Today, most game developers follow the agile approach to documentation. As Jim Highsmith, one of the 17 original signatories of the Agile Manifesto, said, "We embrace documentation, but not hundreds of pages of never-maintained and rarely-used tomes."

Decide the best way to explain your design

It oulines everything from the story to the game mechanics, and can even include your thoughts about art style, game economy, and more. Let's face it – documentation is usually seen as the least fun part of the game development process. "No one reads GDDs anyway." "They become outdated the minute you finish writing them." Hopefully, this article has helped you to think about how a game design document is, essentially, a communication tool for your ideas.

How to Make a Roguelike - Game Developer

If your game is light on story, a logline, rough synopsis, or brief outline of the plot will do very nicely here. "Game design docs are very alive documents," explained Rodolfo Rubens, a Nuclino user and indie game developer at York Game Studio. A great character feels like a natural part of your game's world, yet is unique and interesting with their own traits and personality. The character profile is a popular framework for developing unique characters. Game designers and writers use it to define a character's background, appearance, general strategy, and gameplay style. Or they could be centered around collecting references for characters or environments.

Guerilla Games quest designer and Gravity Ghost lead Erin Robertson Swink has an older blog here on Game Developer detailing "alternatives" to GDDs that actually fit beautifully here in a mechanics section of a GDD. Designer and author Steve Swink also has an older blog resource specifically on mechanics design and game feel that's extremely useful for parsing specific language and communication around mechanics. If you are a solo developer, you may still find a GDD helpful as a reference for yourself (perhaps when you are mired in the "swamp" of the development process to go back and have an answer for "what was I thinking?").

Nuclino also comes with an AI-powered assistant called Sidekick that can help game designers with various aspects of the writing process. With Sidekick, you can generate ideas for characters and plot points, instantly generate descriptions and dialogue, get suggestions for more concise or engaging language, and much more. A game design document or “GDD” is the master document which lists all of the features, concepts and ideas which are supposed to gel together to create the final game experience. A game design document is the single point of reference for your video game project. This template using Milanote is a non-linear version that is online and infinite. The simple process of filling out this GDD template will help you start thinking through your game’s design.

Video game design document examples

Our accomplishments prove that having a comprehensive GDD is essential to any game’s success. To illustrate how vital the GDD is for game development, think of it as your project’s fortress. With a solid basis, your game will survive and successfully enter the market. We often say that the best documentation is that which is findable and up to date, and this is certainly true for GDDs. It’s really important to organize your docs, and regularly update them so everyone can find what they need.

This foundational blueprint offers more than just direction; it ensures projects stay on course, and creativity thrives within established parameters. It acts as a constant reference point and lays the foundation for future iterations. Thanks to the robust capabilities of Notion's platform, this meticulously designed template revolutionizes game development, delivering a comprehensive framework for achieving success.

Traditional GDDs – those lengthy, rigid Word documents, attempting to needlessly explain every detail of the game only to never be updated or read by anyone – are obsolete. As you can see above, many details may change from the initial pitch to the final experience. The goal of a feature document is to focus on a single aspect of the game. In fact, I think documentation and advanced planning are essential to communicate with your team members. Don’t get me wrong, traditional GDDs for older games are great for design insights (especially when the goals are the same), but you don’t need to use their template.

A crucial step in any game pre-production is deciding what the world or environment will be like. A world can be as expansive as a wide-open fantasy landscape, or as minimalistic as a single room. Here's where you let your imagination run wild and set the scene for your character and level design.

This is your chance to define the essence of your game, and provide a quick, clear understanding of what it’s all about. However, I’m not a game designer, and while I can show how you might like to keep track of your design, I would recommend some of the following expert resources for how to actually approach the design process itself. Staging your design document to match the phases of your game’s development can make writing your GDD more efficient. Instead, it can sometimes be better to use different length design documents at different stages of your project.

gdd game design document template

Game Design Documents can be thought of as the "blueprints" for putting together a game. First and foremost, they should very clearly communicate the designer's vision for a game, and do so in a way that is useful and readable for every team member or stakeholder, no matter their discipline. Treating it as a rigid blueprint kills creativity in the team and builds a wall between the ideas and their implementation. Being afraid of deleting and trimming content is just as bad and will lead to your GDD becoming so bloated and outdated that it's impossible to navigate. As your team debates approaches and iterates on game features, retire any docs that are too out of date to easily fix. It’s much better to make a brand-new doc whenever a feature changes radically.

An affordable, easy-to-use WordPress alternative, Wix is a website builder offering free and premium plans. Similar to WordPress, Wix makes it possible to build all kinds of sites, including stores and blogs, in just a few minutes. It's easy to integrate, easy to use, and easy to collaborate with others. With hundreds of tools available, it can be overwhelming to decide which are worth your time.

This sets it apart from Sketch, although their vector-based interface looks similar. Thanks to its AI capabilities, you'll get a site you love in a matter of minutes. The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is an open-source, popular photo editor supported by Linux, macOS, and Windows. If you want a solution that’s cheap (or free) and effective, Weebly is a great software to design a website. It's also another great solution for those looking to create an ecommerce website or online store. When it comes to beautifully designed templates, Squarespace is definitely one of the top web page builders out there.

While you don’t need to know any code to create design prototypes in Framer, this tool supports the addition of custom code on every element you work with. Plus, because Framer works entirely on React and JavaScript — and it’s easy to pull up the code editor while you’re working — it’s a good environment to learn how the language works. Code Free Web Design Software

This can allow you to create a professional-looking website without having to learn programming or coding at all. Perhaps too perfect, because despite being some of the best web design software we’ve tested, it hasn’t had a serious update for a very long time. In our hands-on review, we even wondered whether this is just software on life support. After all, 2022 saw the last update to the web design app, introducing Apple Silicon support. There’s no denying that Adobe Dreamweaver is a powerful web design tool, and has been for a long time. The right web design software can empower you to prototype, wireframe, and design a website that delights your visitors.

Treecard is an impact-first business that helps people make impactful and sustained climate actions that require zero effort. Figma

While you can use Pixelmator for illustration or interface design, it works best as a tool for editing and retouching photos, with features for color correction, retouching, and applying filters. If you’re looking for a powerful, do-it-all graphic design tool, Adobe’s Photoshop has been the leader for decades. While Sketch has recently added some features focused on prototyping and collaboration, the program isn’t as advanced in these areas as some of the other tools on this list. Consumers and developers alike will benefit from an ecosystem where multiple hardware makers build on a common platform.

Amazing Flat Design Websites [for Inspiration]

It's a good tool that does exactly what it's supposed to do and gets the job done. But once you need it for bigger projects, you start running into problems. I'd recommend Marvel for solopreneurs and small businesses who want a fast way to get user testing feedback on a budget.

By implementing these trends, businesses can create websites that captivate users, drive engagement, and foster brand loyalty. We encourage businesses to embrace these web design trends 2024 and embark on their journey toward digital success. In web design, 3D graphics, and interactive elements are all about using three-dimensional visuals and engaging features to make websites more exciting for users. The standout benefit of a flat website design is that it is easily optimized for desktop and mobile devices, allowing users to view content easily.

A code editor developed by Microsoft, it's free, open-source software, and packed with great features. You don’t actually build websites with Pattern Lab; you build components and design systems, which will in turn allow you to create prototypes and finished websites much more quickly and consistently. You don't need anything too expensive or fancy unless you're chasing a career in graphic design or illustration. Even if you would prefer to work with your own design, you can often do so using drag-and-drop functions, usually from a downloaded design with an in-built framework.

Oklahoma House of Representatives

representative of the house

The Constitution vests certain exclusive powers in the House of Representatives, including the right to initiate impeachment proceedings and to originate revenue bills. The organization and character of the House of Representatives have evolved under the influence of political parties, which provide a means of controlling proceedings and mobilizing the necessary majorities. Party leaders, such as the speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders, play a central role in the operations of the institution. From 1910 to 1975 committee and subcommittee chairmanship was determined purely by seniority; members of Congress sometimes had to wait 30 years to get one, but their chairship was independent of party leadership. The rules were changed in 1975 to permit party caucuses to elect chairs, shifting power upward to the party leaders.

A general rule of thumb is that each member of the House of Representatives represents roughly 600,000 people. The Constitution empowers the House of Representatives to impeach federal officials for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors" and empowers the Senate to try such impeachments. The House may approve "articles of impeachment" by a simple majority vote; however, a two-thirds vote is required for conviction in the Senate. A convicted official is automatically removed from office and may be disqualified from holding future office under the United States. No further punishment is permitted during the impeachment proceedings; however, the party may face criminal penalties in a normal court of law. The position of chief administrative officer (CAO) was created by the 104th Congress following the 1994 mid-term elections, replacing the positions of doorkeeper and director of non-legislative and financial services (created by the previous congress to administer the non-partisan functions of the House).

As a result, the process to gain ballot access varies greatly from state to state, and in the case of a third party in the United States may be affected by results of previous years' elections. Elections for representatives are held in every even-numbered year, on Election Day the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The Articles of Confederation

Also referred to as a congressman or congresswoman, each representative is elected to a two-year term serving the people of a specific congressional district. Among other duties, representatives introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees. The number of representatives with full voting rights is 435, a number set by Public Law 62-5 on August 8, 1911, and in effect since 1913.

While I voted for this bill, it was designed to fail under suspension of the rules as a "cover" vote because House Republicans chose not to attach it to the foreign aid package that passed the House today – and in so doing, gave cover votes to Democrats who have been blocking actual border security. The Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Representatives is responsible for enforcement of the prohibition. Johnson’s reliance on Democratic votes to pass key pieces of legislation, including a major government funding bill that cleared the House last month, has outraged some hard-right Republicans. Members were voting on a package worth close to $95bn in total, but which had been broken up into four separate bills, as Johnson effectively de-coupled the vote on Ukraine from funding for Israel, which is more widely supported among both Democrats and Republicans. Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine.

This agreement was part of what is referred to as The Great Compromise. Enter your ZIP code in the banner of this page to find the representative for your congressional district. The package largely mirrors the foreign aid proposal passed by the Senate in February, although it designates $10bn of the Ukraine funding as a repayable loan to appease some Republican members.

The powers of the presiding officer are extensive; one important power is that of controlling the order in which members of the House speak. No member may make a speech or a motion unless they have first been recognized by the presiding officer. Moreover, the presiding officer may rule on a "point of order" (a member's objection that a rule has been breached); the decision is subject to appeal to the whole House. States entitled to more than one representative are divided into single-member districts. This has been a federal statutory requirement since 1967 pursuant to the act titled An Act For the relief of Doctor Ricardo Vallejo Samala and to provide for congressional redistricting.[18] Before that law, general ticket representation was used by some states. To regain control of the House, Democrats needed a pick-up of 15 seats.

The term of a member chosen in a special election usually begins the next day, or as soon as the results are certified. The House also has the power to formally censure or reprimand its members; censure or reprimand of a member requires only a simple majority, and does not remove that member from office. House were held on November 3, 2020, and coincide with the 2020 presidential election. Besides the representative from each state, there are a small number of delegates and a resident commission.

Last month, Greene unveiled a motion to remove Johnson as speaker, although she has not yet moved to force a vote on the matter. In the past week, two more House Republicans – Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona – have signed on as co-sponsors. Immediately after the bill passed, ZelenskIy released a statement expressing his gratitude to both parties “and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track”. Voting began hours ahead of schedule in an extraordinary Saturday session that delayed the House’s planned recess.

Mass House of Representatives passes $58 billion budget

representative of the house

Go to the Clerk’s site for more information about representatives. — Today, Congresswoman Kat Cammack introduced her resolution to prohibit Members of the House of Representatives from bringing or displaying a flag of a foreign nation on the floor of the House. The passed bills will be combined into a single package to simplify the voting process for the Senate, which will need to reapprove the proposal before it can go to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. The Israel bill includes about $4.4bn to replenish depleted US supplies given to Israel; $4bn for missile defense, including the much-vaunted Iron Dome, and $1.2bn for the Iron Beam; and $3.5bn to help Israel buy weapons. There are also provisions to make it easier to supply Israel with US munitions held in other countries. In addition, House members may serve on joint committees with Senate members.

h Congress

The Constitution does not specify the duties and powers of the speaker, which are instead regulated by the rules and customs of the House. Speakers have a role both as a leader of the House and the leader of their party (which need not be the majority party; theoretically, a member of the minority party could be elected as speaker with the support of a fraction of members of the majority party). Under the Presidential Succession Act (1947), the speaker is second in the line of presidential succession after the vice president. Whether working on Capitol Hill or in his / her congressional district, a representative’s schedule is extremely busy.

Republican Policy Committee Chairman

HISTORY.com works with a wide range of writers and editors to create accurate and informative content. All articles are regularly reviewed and updated by the HISTORY.com team. Articles with the “HISTORY.com Editors” byline have been written or edited by the HISTORY.com editors, including Amanda Onion, Missy Sullivan, Matt Mullen and Christian Zapata. The concept of a bicameral legislature dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe, and was most notably—from the framers’ perspective—established in 17th-century England, with the formation of the British Parliament’s upper House of Lords and the lower House of Commons.

Representatives Office Hours

For the Republicans it is the chair of the House Republican Policy Committee, followed by the campaign committee chairman (styled as the National Republican Congressional Committee). The speaker is the presiding officer of the House but does not preside over every debate. Instead, they delegate the responsibility of presiding to other members in most cases. The presiding officer sits in a chair in the front of the House chamber.

Committees in both houses review bills that have been introduced by their colleagues, holding hearings in which their merits are debated. Constitution saw the two houses as having distinct roles, with the House designed to serve as a forum for more pressing, everyday concerns, while the Senate was intended to be a place for calmer deliberation. The Speaker of the House is also the second person in the U.S. presidential line of succession—the order in which presidents are replaced if they die, resign or are removed from office—after the Vice President and before the President pro tempore of the Senate. The Senate includes 100 members, with each of the 50 states electing two senators to this body of Congress to six-year terms.

House Rules

All committees have websites where they post information about the legislation they are drafting. 8035 on Saturday, April 20, lawmakers waved the flag of Ukraine on the floor of the House of Representatives, eliciting frustration from Rep. Cammack and colleagues. Speaking from the Capitol earlier this week, Johnson said providing aid to Ukraine was “critically important” and “the right thing” despite the potential power of his opponents to bring him down in yet another internal party coup. Democrats have said they may support Johnson in any effort by the Republican far-right to oust him over Ukraine aid.

With only a bit more than three months left for major business this term, Mariano said health care and housing legislation are close to the top of his near-term agenda. Representatives tacked on less spending via amendments than they did to last year’s budget, and a shade less than the $108.5 million average between fiscal years 2022 and 2024 as calculated by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. The House also adopted rules for the upcoming 59th legislative session, which begins Monday, February 6.

On October 25, 2023, he was elected unanimously by by his House Republican colleagues to serve as the 56th Speaker of the House. As a Member of Congress, he represents the nearly 760,000 residents of 16 parishes in the northwest and western regions of the state. House of Representatives on December 10, 2016, by the largest margin of victory in his region in more than 50 years and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress.

Republican Leadership

The CAO also assumed some of the responsibilities of the House Information Services, which previously had been controlled directly by the Committee on House Administration, then headed by Representative Charlie Rose of North Carolina, along with the House "Folding Room". In the instance when the presidency and both Houses of Congress are controlled by one party, the speaker normally takes a low profile and defers to the president. For that situation the House minority leader can play the role of a de facto "leader of the opposition", often more so than the Senate minority leader, due to the more partisan nature of the House and the greater role of leadership. After the conference chair, there are differences between each party's subsequent leadership ranks. After the Democratic caucus chair is the campaign committee chair (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee), then the co-chairs of the Steering Committee.

We will break the back of the uniparty and return this country to the hard-working Americans being taken for granted. Representatives carry out a broad scope of work in order to best represent their constituents. Get answers to frequently asked questions about committees from the Clerk of the House.

It is divided up, as it were, into forty-seven seigniories, in each of which a Standing Committee is the court-baron and its chairman lord-proprietor. These petty barons, some of them not a little powerful, but none of them within the reach of the full powers of rule, may at will exercise almost despotic sway within their own shires, and may sometimes threaten to convulse even the realm itself. The largest committee of the House is the Committee of the Whole, which, as its name suggests, consists of all members of the House. The Committee meets in the House chamber; it may consider and amend bills, but may not grant them final passage. Generally, the debate procedures of the Committee of the Whole are more flexible than those of the House itself. One advantage of the Committee of the Whole is its ability to include otherwise non-voting members of Congress.

Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. Other leadership positions include the majority and minority leaders who monitor legislative activity on the floor, and the majority and minority whips who ensure that House members vote according to their respective parties' positions. The House is the lower of the two legislative bodies in the U.S. government. It has 435 members, with the number of representatives per state dependent upon that state's population. Rather than represent their entire state, as Senate members do, they represent a specific district.

At least publicly, there was little in the way of passionate debate over tough choices like how to best spend taxpayer dollars and whether to raise or cut taxes. As a matter of policy and principle, I strongly support providing aid to our friend and ally Israel to support them generally, and particularly in the wake of Hamas’ barbaric terror attack and Iran’s recent strike. I was proud to pass Israel funding in November, fully paid for – and was prepared to advance an Israel-only bill now to stand with Israel. However, the Israel aid package was paired to gain Democrat support with over $9 billion in humanitarian aid to Gaza and other areas, which will certainly and inevitably find its way into the hands of Hamas — effectively funding both sides of the war and undermining Israel. Therefore, I was unfortunately forced to vote no on this measure, a position only reinforced when AIPAC scored the “rule” vote to proceed to the total package, despite the aforementioned aid to Hamas and the lack of border protection for America in the package. OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, on Thursday held a public meeting to discuss allegations of abuse in Oklahoma prisons.

The so-called bicameral—from the Latin term for “two chambers”—legislature was created by the framers of the U.S. But it’s important to note that this was not the first format established by the framers for the federal government. The U.S. House of Representatives is the lower house of Congress and plays a vital role, along with the Senate, in the process of moving proposed legislation to law. The bicameral relationship between the two bodies is vital to the American system of checks and balances that the Founding Fathers of the United States envisioned when writing the U.S.

The House erupted into applause when the Ukraine bill passed, with the chair, Marc Molinaro of New York, admonishing members not to wave Ukrainian flags. Given the shorter terms of House members, their relative proximity to their constituents and their larger numbers, the House is generally the more fractious and partisan of the two chambers. Its proceedings and deliberations, like those of the Senate, are recorded in the Congressional Record, ensuring transparency in the legislative process.

The speaker acts as leader of the House and combines several institutional and administrative roles. Majority and minority leaders represent their respective parties on the House floor. Whips assist leadership in managing their party's legislative program on the House floor. A party caucus or conference is the name given to a meeting of or organization of all party members in the House.

House of the Dragon Watch for Free Official Website for the HBO Series

house of the dragon episodes

After a three-year hiatus, we're back to Westeros for an all-new prequel series set in the world of Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon brings viewers back to the reign of House Targaryen, 200 years before the events of the original series, when King Viserys Targaryen ruled over the Seven Kingdoms with the help of 17 dragons. Catch exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew breaking down the series' biggest moments and the process behind creating its memorable sets. As the first century of the Targaryen dynasty came to a close The health of the Old King, Jaehaerys, was failing. In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength with ten adult dragons under its yoke.

Special 34 Introducing the Characters: Daemon Targaryen

The only thing we can’t promise is that your favorites will make it to the end of the season. When you play the game of thrones, after all, you win or you die. And with the series already renewed for Season 2, no one is winning outright anytime soon. The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances.

Special 9 The House That Dragons Built S1 E9

During its run, House of the Dragon episodes were released on Sundays in the US and Mondays in the UK. However, they're now all available to stream on both platforms in full. We then get a brief interlude wherein the practiced familial politesse seems to drop, and starts to shade into something more real. For a fleeting moment, we get glimpse of what House of the Dragon would look like if these characters actually loved each other like a family should. Viserys stands — sort of — and makes an emotional entreaty to his family to get along, for his sake. He removes the golden half-mask to reveal an empty eye socket (we do not get a shot of Aemond One-Eye going "Twinsies!" though we really should have) and a jaw from which the flesh has stripped away, exposing tendon and ligaments.

Special 37 Introducing the Characters: Christon Cole

When it's Rhaenyra's turn, she barely starts speaking when the grim figure of King Viserys enters the hall and hobbles to the Iron Throne, half his face hidden behind a golden mask. Considine really sells Viserys's agony as he stumbles on the Iron Throne steps, only to be helped up by Daemon. Vaemond steps up and lays out his case, artfully avoiding making any overt accusations as to the legitimacy of Jace and Luke as true Velaryons, instead focusing on his own status as Corlys' closest kin. If Rhaenys will side with her, Rhaenyra offers to marry her sons, Jace the future king and Luke the future Lord of Driftmark, to Rhaenys' granddaughters Baela and Rhaena, respectively.

Special 5 The House That Dragons Built S1 E5

Alicent, however, believes him to be talking about their son, Aegon the Aess. Rhaenyra goes to the bedridden Viserys and tearfully asks him to defend her against Vaemond. He seems too out of it to comply, but the next morning, as the maesters are poking and palpating and lancing and leeching his emaciated frame, he tells Otto that he wants to dine with his entire family that evening. Daemon and Rhaenyra worry about Vaemond's petition to the Iron Throne, and wonder if Rhaenys will back him, because her true allegiance is a mystery.

04 King of the Narrow Sea

Daemon announces his intentions.Rhaenyra oversteps at the Small Council. If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed.

Episode 3: What to know about the Crabfeeder’s war on Westeros

The question has been raised of whether the fan excitement is there for that second season, anywhere to the degree of the traditional anticipation for Game of Thrones seasons. Due in part to last year's strikes, House of the Dragon is coming off a long layoff of over 18 months since the first season's finale. The first season of the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon made its debut on HBO and Max in August of 2022, about two and a half years after Game of Thrones wrapped up its groundbreaking run. ‘House of the Dragon’s first season can be streamed on Max. While Alicent enlists Cole and Aemond to track down Aegon, Otto gathers the great houses of Westeros to affirm their allegiance.

With George R.R. Martin having written so many ancillary books about the Thrones universe and HBO actively working on multiple spinoffs for the last several years, it was clear that more visits to Westeros were on the way. Sure, many fans were ultimately unhappy with the series, especially in its endgame. But there's no doubt that Game of Thrones is a TV series of significant cultural consequence. The doubters, of course, were proved wrong, and Game of Thrones was the most popular prestige show of its era, straddling the heyday of premium cable and the advent of streaming. When Game of Thrones debuted in 2011, it was seen as a massive risk for HBO.

Rhaenys considers the offer, but doesn't tip her hand, because, again, she's awesome like that. Daemon tries to shame Alicent for administering "milk of the poppy" to the king for his pain, but she's not having it. She's the family member who's charged with daily care of the loved one with failing health, and he's the know-it-all brother-in-law who never calls but just breezes in once a year to complain. As for what we're gonna do about having two characters named Viserys running around ... So for the repellent, older Aegon, son of Viserys and Alicent, let's go with Aegon the Aess.

And for the younger Aegon, son of Daemon and Rhaenyra, let's go with Aegon the Baeby. Rhaenyra introduces Viserys to the two sons she's had with Daemon that he hasn't met yet — toddler Aegon (who looks suitably creeped out by the leering demilich Viserys has become) and young infant Viserys. Which is not to diminish the good, hard work the actors are doing here — Olivia Cooke lets us glimpse the rage and shame roiling just under Alicent's outward composure. Watching her, we can see how many times she's been put in this situation before, and expects to be put in it again.

The show is set hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones but takes place hundreds of years before the events of that show. Series co-creator Ryan Condal, a co-showrunner on season 1 with Miguel Sapochnik, is now the sole showrunner on season 2. Co-creator George R.R. Martin also executive produces House of the Dragon with Condal, Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, and Vince Gerardis. Cast and crew, including Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra) and Matt Smith (Daemon), examine how Rhaenyra’s lies are starting to catch up with her, and the slow unraveling of Daemon’s marriage while living in Pentos. Ryan Condal, director Clare Kilner, Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Emily Carey (Alicent Hightower) and more dive into Rhaenyra and Laenor's marriage arrangement, and where Alicent's allegiances lie.

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the "Dance of the Dragons".

Rhaenyra welcomes her uncle Daemon back to the Red Keep. The question of how much House of the Dragon's popularity is affected by its long layoff will be answered this summer when the series returns for its eight-episode second season. During this Targaryen Civil War, George R.R. Martin killed off half the population of Westeros and, as noted previously, nearly every member of the blondest family. However, the HBO series has already tweaked parts of the book, so there’s no reason to believe that everything will go down as Martin wrote in the lore. Queen Alicent and Otto Hightower will definitely begin to see consequences of their long game, and Rhaenyra will be coming for the Iron Throne with Blood and Cheese (wait for them, oh boy) paving the way. The cast and crew describe the various changes made to recognizable sets like the Red Keep and the Throne to reflect the decadence of the time period and how they evolved over time.

Like its predecessor, much of House of the Dragon takes place in Westeros, with familiar settings like King’s Landing and Dragonstone, but keep an eye out for some new locations we’ve never seen before.

Ryan Condal, director Clare Kilner, Emily Carey (Alicent Hightower) and more hone in on the motivation behind Daemon’s advances towards Rhaenyra, approaching intimate scenes, and the fractures in Rhaenyra and Alicent's friendship. And Viserys, finally, after hanging on long past what anyone might reasonably expected of the guy, dies. Only you can unite the realm, he says, thinking he is speaking to his daughter. But it's his wife who hears it, and nods, and assures him she will do what needs to be done. Down in King's Landing, on the Street of Silk, a spy from the Red Keep arrives to inform Mysaria (remember her? Daemon's ex? The White Worm?) about the drama at the castle. A suckling pig is placed before Aemond One-Eye, reminding Jace of the time back in episode six when he, Luke and Aegon dressed up a pig as a dragon and gave it to then-dragonless Aemond as a prank.

See the full list of House of the Dragon cast and characters here. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

Episode 9: A brief biography of Rhaenys Targaryen, ‘the Queen Who Never Was’

The show chronicles the later days of the dynasty, including the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. The “Dance of the Dragons” is the civil war that ensued between the Targaryens. Thrones fans may recall when young Shireen Baratheon and Ser Davos briefly discuss the battle as she reads a history book about it.

Reviews

House of the Dragon, in its first season, was a successful show by just about any metric. As reported by Variety at the time, which cited Warner Bros. Discovery, the first season finale of House of the Dragon drew 9.1 million viewers.

Viserys and Rhaenyra broker agreements with the Velaryons. We shall also meet an endless stream of new character including Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), a mysterious healer from Harrenhal, who plays a pivotal role in the book. Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. Obviously, the show will continue to track the Targaryen lineage about 300 years prior to near-extinction level on Game of Thrones. So, we’ll see the “Dance of the Dragons,” so nicknamed by the civilians of Westeros, take place with mass casualties as a result.

Get ready for House of the Dragon with brand new music from composer Ramin Djawadi along with your favorites from past seasons of Game of Thrones. The cast and crew break down everything you need to know before you dive into Season 1. It's possible that bad feelings about how Game of Thrones ended could spill over into fan reactions to the newer show, even though five years will have passed by the time the new episodes arrive. The second season of Game of Thrones was consumed by the show's War of Five Kings; it was even adapted from a book called A Clash of Kings.

If you want to see how that part of Targaryen history unfolds, you’ll have to keep an eye on House of the Dragon. Over the course of the series viewers could see up to 17 different dragons. As they are introduced, be sure to visit the Official Dragon Index for a quick look at which dragon is which. Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign.
